In the month of February, the visit of Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics, Labour and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, marked a significant step in further strengthening Hamburg–India relations. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the Senator travelled across New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, engaging with key stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, technology, and maritime affairs.
The Hamburg Representation Mumbai played a central role in supporting the delegation throughout the visit, facilitating meetings and coordinating engagements across all four cities.
Strengthening Dialogue in New Delhi
The programme commenced in New Delhi, where the delegation held discussions with leading institutions including the German Embassy New Delhi, Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Germany Trade & Invest, Invest India, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and NASSCOM. These exchanges focused on key areas such as innovation, investment opportunities, skills development, and future-oriented Indo-German cooperation.
Mumbai: Advancing Maritime Collaboration
In Mumbai, discussions with the Mumbai Port Authority and the Shipping Corporation of India centred on global shipping developments and opportunities to strengthen cooperation with Hamburg’s maritime cluster, including the Port of Hamburg.
A key highlight of the Mumbai programme was the event “Ports in Conversation – Hamburg meets Mumbai,” which brought together leading representatives from the port, logistics, and shipping sectors. The event featured opening remarks by Senator Dr. Melanie Leonhard and Hendrik Meyn, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.
Further presentations by Hamburg Cruise Gate, EUROGATE, and HHLA highlighted developments in port operations, cruise business, and terminal infrastructure.
The programme concluded with a panel discussion titled “Planning the Ports of Tomorrow: Capacity, Resilience and Sustainability,” featuring representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Innovation of Hamburg, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Mumbai Port Authority, and the India Ports Association.
The Mumbai programme also featured the Hamburg Evening Reception, where the 15th anniversary of the Hamburg Representation Mumbai was celebrated—marking a significant milestone in Hamburg’s long-standing engagement with India.
Chennai: Focus on Sustainable Port Development
The delegation’s visit continued in Chennai with engagements at the Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Limited. Discussions focused on sustainable port development, logistics efficiency, and opportunities to deepen cooperation between Hamburg and India’s maritime sector.
Bengaluru: Driving Innovation and Technology Partnerships
The final leg of the visit took place in Bengaluru, where the delegation engaged with leading global technology and engineering companies, including SAP, Airbus, Tata Elxsi, MathWorks, and Quest Global. These interactions highlighted the strong potential for collaboration in digitalisation, research, and advanced industry sectors.
