About the Role
You will own the day-to-day finance and compliance function for TolaData GmbH from India, acting as the bridge between company leadership and our external German advisors: the Steuerberater (external accountant), tax consultants, payroll provider, and Notar. You will not need to be a German tax expert on day one; deep technical positions remain with our Steuerberater. What we need is a sharp, dependable controller-coordinator who keeps the books closed, deadlines met, cash visible, and advisors moving, in German where required.
What You’ll Do
- Own the day-to-day finance and compliance function for TolaData’s German entity, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full regulatory adherence.
- Act as the primary point of contact for the external Steuerberater, tax consultants, payroll provider, and Notar, ensuring smooth and timely coordination on statutory filings, corporate filings, and legal formalities.
- Manage monthly book closure, ledger reconciliations, and month-end reporting for the German entity.
- Review cashflows regularly, flag risks early, and give leadership clear visibility on the entity’s cash position.
- Track and manage the German statutory compliance calendar: tax filings, annual financial statements, Handelsregister and other corporate obligations, ensuring no deadline slips.
- Ensure payroll compliance in line with German labour and tax requirements, coordinating with the payroll provider and advisors.
- Support statutory audits and respond to information requests from auditors, tax authorities (Finanzamt), and other regulatory bodies.
- Partner with global finance and leadership to align German-entity practices with company-wide financial processes, and support consolidation and management reporting.
- Maintain overlap with Central European business hours (approx. 12:30–9:00 pm IST core window flexibility expected) for advisor and leadership coordination.
Key Stakeholders You’ll Work With
- External accountant (Steuerberater) and tax consultants in Germany
- Notary (Notar) for corporate and legal filings
- Payroll provider / payroll compliance advisors
- German tax and regulatory authorities (e.g., Finanzamt), via advisors
- Global finance team and company leadership across Berlin, the US, and India
What You Bring (Must-Haves)
- 6+ years of relevant experience in finance and/or compliance roles, including at least 2 years working on the books of a German (or DACH) entity, typically gained in the shared services / GBS centre of a German MNC, a Big 4 German desk, or a KPO serving German clients.
- German language proficiency at B2 or above (Goethe-Institut, telc, or equivalent certification preferred; C1 is a strong plus). You must be comfortable reading German statutory correspondence and holding working conversations with German advisors.
- Strong hands-on experience with monthly book closure, ledger reconciliations, and financial reporting (record-to-report).
- Demonstrated experience coordinating with external accountants, tax consultants, or auditors on statutory and legal matters.
- Experience reviewing and managing cashflows, with the ability to flag risks and support informed decision-making.
- Working knowledge of payroll compliance processes; exposure to German payroll is a distinct advantage.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple statutory and compliance deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently with a remote, international leadership team.
Nice to Have
- Prior experience managing finance and compliance for a German GmbH or the German subsidiary of an international company.
- Familiarity with German accounting and compliance tools, especially DATEV; working knowledge of HGB (German GAAP) concepts.
- Experience in a SaaS or software company, including subscription revenue and deferred revenue treatment.
- A professional qualification in accounting or finance (CA, CMA, CPA, ACCA, or equivalent).
Who You Are
- Smart. You get to grips with regulatory and financial complexity quickly, and explain it simply to the people who need to act on it.
- High on Integrity. You handle financial and compliance matters with honesty and precision, even when it’s the harder path.
- Passionate. You genuinely care about getting things right; accuracy and compliance aren’t just boxes to tick.
- Agile. Comfortable navigating evolving regulations and ambiguity, without always having a fixed playbook to follow.
- Relationship-First. You build trust with accountants, consultants, and colleagues alike; long-term working relationships over quick fixes.
Location, Hours and Compensation
Based in India, remote-first. Candidates in Pune, Bengaluru, NCR, Mumbai, or Chennai are especially welcome given proximity to German-language finance talent communities, but strong candidates from anywhere in India will be considered. Working hours are flexible with a required overlap with Central European Time. Compensation is competitive and benchmarked against German-language finance roles in India’s shared services market.
