The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) invites you to a Virtual Fact-Finding Master Session on the Prevention of Post-Harvest Losses in India. The Session takes a look at the impact of Post-Harvest Losses in India and explores the challenges in various Indian regions to support the growing need for Post-Harvest Loss prevention in India.
Post-Harvest Losses are the deterioration in both quantity and quality of food commodities from the time they are harvested until their final consumption. They are caused primarily by poor storage and lack of adequate transportation facilities. In India, farmers can lose as much as 40% of their produce to Post-Harvest Losses, or over EUR 10.5 billion per year collectively.
Indian farmers cannot command fair prices for their produce due to post-harvest losses, leading to loss of income. Often, farmers need to sell their produce at a very low price due to distress selling for fear of spoilage. On average, farmers in India lose around EUR 7.00 billion of investment annually.
Prevention of Post-Harvest Losses in India will support Indian farmers in attaining better prices for their produce while also ensuring an adequate supply of high-quality food for the population. However, India’s wide range of agricultural produce and regional variances pose unique challenges which cannot be addressed using one technology/solution.
The Virtual Fact-Finding Master Session on the Prevention of Post-Harvest Losses in India is organised within the framework of “Innovation platform and hybrid trade fair - Reducing post-harvest losses in India” Project. The Session and the Project are implemented by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
