AN APPEAL

Cancer Institute (WIA) has a track record of over six decades of service in the field of cancer care and control. It was established more than 69 years ago by Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy and a group of remarkable public spirited women with a mission to promote state of the art cancer treatment for all sections of people without discrimination. Stating as a cancer hospital with 12 beds and 2 honorary medical officers, Cancer Institute today is a comprehensive cancer centre comprising over 650 beds, a Research Centre, College of Oncological Science, a division of Preventive Oncology and Palliative Care.

Annually, over 15,500 new patients and 120,000 follow up cases are seen at the Institute. They are drawn from all over India but mainly from the five Southern states. Of the hospital patients, 25-30% are treated totally free and another 35-40% pay a highly subsidised amount which is mostly supported through welfare schemes. The ethos of the Institute is "Service to all' irrespective of social class, community or religion. The increasing demand and spiralling cost of medicare is placing a significant financial strain on us and hampers our progress.

Except the hospital, all the remaining divisions - Research, Preventive oncology, Palliative Care and College of Oncological Sciences are non-earning. As a comprehensive cancer center and with proliferation in technology & knowledge and our commitment to cancer control, our needs are multiple, based on our activities.

Our services to the needy cancer patients will not be possible without the support provided by kind hearted people like you. We request help to install a Solar Power Plant Power Requirement for Cancer Institute(WIA) At present, the power requirement is met from the supply of power from TANGEDCO, a unit of the Tamil Nadu Government. The demand estimate for our Institute is 2100 KVA. Our Institute spends Rs 6 to 7 cr per year on Electricity purchases, apart from the use of DG sets for emergency requirements.

Being a charitable institution, the electricity charges are huge, more so with the recent steep increase in tariff. All this money would be better utilized to treat patients.

Solar Power Plant

With a view to reduce the power costs, the Institute is exploring various options like Solar power, Wind power etc. As a first step, the Institute has identified a Solar Power Vendor to put up a Roof top Solar power plant at our Dr V Shanta Campus, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai. The capacity of the plant is 200 kwp costing Rs 140 lakhs. The Institute will benefit by reducing the costs of power significantly every year.

Looking forward to your support and thanking you in anticipation.
