Conclusion of Human Rights Due Diligence Training for the Private Sector

16/08/2022

From 5 April 2022 to 28 April 2022, UNDP India, in partnership with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and amfori, conducted a series of capacity-building initiatives on human rights due diligence (HRDD) for companies in India.

India is a major economic country with increased influence on the global value chain. A growing number of Indian companies have their presence abroad, while foreign companies are looking to strengthen their investment in India. Indian suppliers are also ever more becoming preferred suppliers for foreign economies.

The greater focus on the protection of people and the planet leads to more significant requirements for corporate non-financial disclosures. For example, India recently enforced the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), while the EU took a step closer to amending its non-financial disclosures with a proposal on Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The expanding integration of Indian businesses in the global value chain means businesses of all sizes are required to adhere to the expanding requirements toward human rights due diligence and ESG reporting.

To support companies in India with their HRDD requirements, UNDP India, in partnership with the IGCC and amfori, conducted three capacity-building initiatives, each targeting the different needs of Indian businesses.

The HRDD workshop conducted on 5 April was designed for companies at the beginning of the HRDD journey with a 3-hour, practical, accessible session customised with India-specific case studies and examples. In total, 88 participants completed the workshop.

The HRDD Training for Textile Sector was conducted on 7, 12, and 19 April and was designed for textile manufacturers looking to strengthen their HRDD processes. The training consists of 3 modules and a total of 8 hours of training duration. In total, 28 company representatives participated in and completed the training.

The HRDD Training for Construction and Real Estate Sectors was conducted on 22, 26, and 28 April and was designed for Indian companies in the sector looking to improve their HRDD processes. The training consists of 3 modules and a total of 8 hours of training duration. In total, 21 company representatives participated in and completed the training.

Both the training was designed with case studies and examples relevant to the Indian market to provide practical knowledge on HRDD to Indian companies.

We received a tremendous response to these three initiatives. Despite having a maximum capacity of 150, we received an overwhelming 306 registrations. We thank you for the support.
