German Delegation: Energy Storage Solutions Technology Symposium

08/04/2024

With a population of 1.42 billion and a rapidly growing economy, India is dependent on stable energy availability. At the same time, the country must integrate its growing renewable energy capacity into the electricity grid. Advanced energy storage technologies and green hydrogen will be crucial in facilitating this shift to a green energy system.

To tackle these challenges, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) organised a business delegation visit to India with a focus on Energy Storage Solutions including Green Hydrogen. The project was supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs & Climate Action (BMWK) under the Energy Solutions – made in Germany Initiative and by Eclareon GmbH. The delegation was conducted from 27th - November to 1st December 2023 at the Claridges, New Delhi.

The four participating companies from Germany were:

  1. SFC Energy AG - Manufacturer of Hydrogen and Methanol Fuel Cells.
  2. UCanPower GmbH - Developer and manufacturer of Energy Storage Solutions.
  3. Dornier Power and Heat GmbH - Global engineering services provider supporting in energy and infrastructure sector.
  4. WS Reformer GmbH - Providing methane reforming technology to produce green hydrogen from biogas/syngas.

During the five-day visit, the IGCC organised meetings with potential business partners from various companies. All the German companies participating received an enthusiastic response.

During the presentation event held on 28th November 2023, the participating German companies had an opportunity to showcase their technologies. Experts from Germany and India participated in the event to provide a comprehensive overview of the German and Indian markets in the RE, Green Hydrogen & energy storage sector. Katja Esche, representing the German Energy Storage Association (BVES), shared insights on the topic of "Energy Storage: Flexibility and Security of Supply in Net-Zero Energy Systems." Meanwhile, Praseeth Prabhakaran, associated with the DVGW Research Centre at the Engler-Bunte-Institute of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), focused on "Standardisation, Testing, and Intelligent Energy Valleys" as crucial elements of the hydrogen ecosystem, drawing from ongoing projects in Germany. Debi Prasad Dash, Executive Director of the Energy Storage Association in India (IESA), emphasized the significance of Energy Storage Solutions as a pivotal component of India's Renewable Energy Goals. Additionally, Santosh Gurunath, Co-Founder and CEO of Umagine Hydrogen Private Limited, shed light on the "Role of Green Hydrogen in Green Energy & Clean Transport" within the Indian ecosystem.

In a thought-provoking panel discussion - "Energy Transition & Role of Energy Storage and Green Hydrogen," experts from India gathered to explore and unravel the intricacies of the evolving energy landscape. Moderated by Debi Prasad Dash, Executive Director of the Energy Storage Association (IESA), the discussion featured below distinguished panellists, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the table.

  • Abhishek Alhans, Sr. Manager, BESS (BD) at Replus Engitech Pvt Ltd.
  • Sanskriti Dubey, Senior Manager, Market Growth & Communications, Fluence India
  • Rakesh Jha, Senior Director, Fichtner Consulting Engineers India Pvt Ltd.
  • DMR Panda, General Manager (Renewable Energy-Hydrogen), NTPC Limited

The panel discussion proved to be a valuable platform for stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of the nuances surrounding energy transition, energy storage, and the pivotal role of green hydrogen. The diverse perspectives and practical insights shared by the panellist contribute to shaping a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

As a result of the delegation visit, new partnerships were built within the rapidly evolving fields of energy storage solutions and green hydrogen, thereby strengthening Indo-German business relations, and contributing to the modernisation of India’s energy system.
