Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) along with the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) jointly organized a round table on ‘Green Hydrogen’ in Chennai on 26th April 2023. Mr. Mallikarjuna, Regional Director IGCC Chennai welcomed the roundtable conference by emphasizing the need to explore potential synergies among various stakeholders regarding the Indo-German Green Hydrogen projects, especially given the various funding schemes offered by Germany.
Michaela Kuechler, Consul General of the German Consulate, Chennai discussed Germany’s “National Hydrogen Policy,” and the importance of utilizing Green Hydrogen. She also shared information that Govt. of Germany aims for climate neutrality by 2045. As per the National Green Hydrogen Strategy, the goal is to have 10 GW of electrolyser capacity in Germany by 2030. Another important goal of the national green hydrogen strategy is to promote an international hydrogen economy. First, it is a global effort to bring down the cost of green hydrogen. Second because it is no doubt that Germany will remain a net importer of energy also in a climate-neutral world.
Already, two years ago, the Government of Germany committed more than 9 billion Euros to support the establishment of a green hydrogen economy. From these 9 billion Euros, 2 billion Euros were earmarked for green hydrogen project developments outside Europe. Once these projects are able to produce green hydrogen, Germany would certainly consider importing this green fuel.
Rolf Behrndt, Principal Advisor, H2UPPP, IGEF briefed the audience about the German funding schemes for Green Hydrogen projects. He laid out the objectives of Germany’s ‘National Hydrogen Strategy’ and the grant funding for Indo-German Green Hydrogen Projects. He concluded his presentation by elaborating on the tremendous potential for Indo-German cooperation in the field of green hydrogen. After the presentation, participants from diverse industries participated in an insightful discussion.
The presentations were followed by thought-provoking discussions moderated by Mallikarjuna, Regional Director of IGCC Chennai. Organizations belonging to varied industry sectors participated in the round table meetings.
