The origins of the Hafengeburtstag trace back to Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who, in May, 1189, granted the Hamburg merchants exemption from customs duties for ships travelling from Hamburg to the North Sea. As a result, the anniversary of this charter is celebrated annually on or around the weekend of May 7th.
This year, the festival celebrated its 835th anniversary with a diverse three-day program at the festival – with something for everyone, whether young or old, and from the morning until late at night.
While the banks of the River Elbe were transformed into a majestic maritime open-air stage, where families could enjoy activity areas, the open-air concerts and live performances featuring national and international acts encouraged visitors to join in the celebrations; transforming the river into a mesmerizing sea of lights. The highlight of the evening was a unique show program featuring three captivating acts, culminating in a majestic display of fireworks, which was followed by a mesmerising light and drone show on Saturday evening. Additionally, throughout the celebrations, cultural institutions offering guided tours and exhibitions as well as hands-on activities at museums provided diverse experiences for maritime enthusiasts.
