Professional Orientation Session by DUALpro Team

12/08/2022

DUALpro, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce’s expert team for Professional Orientation, presented an interactive and informative session on Germany’s dual education system at the conference – “Gateway to Germany. Connect-Learn-Implement” on 10th July 2022 in Lonavla. The conference, which was organized by the Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan, was attended by around 50 school principals from Mumbai and Pune.

The DUALpro Team provided them with information on education paths in Germany for Indian students with German language skills. The dual education system combines process-oriented learning in a company with theoretical classes conducted by a vocational school or education partner. This system, which is traditionally practised in several countries, notably Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is worldwide renowned for its effectiveness in creating a highly employable workforce and reducing youth unemployment. Germany’s Skilled Immigration Act, which came into effect in March 2020, has opened new paths for Indian students to access the dual education system.

However, students, parents, and teachers often lack understanding of the system and awareness of the possibilities and advantages of dual training or study programs. Thus, the session by DUALpro was aimed at providing information to school principals about the structure and history of Germany’s dual education system and its benefits, such as defined training allowance requirements and benefits – such as a fixed income which increases with every training year, the chance to obtain additional qualifications, and enhanced practical understanding. It also showed principals the diversity of areas offered – trades and subjects from technical to healthcare and medicine to hospitality and IT are trained dually in Germany.

IGCC’s mission is to promote business between India and Germany, and companies on both sides are in dire need of skilled talent. According to a study done by KOFA (Kompetenzzentrum Fachkräftesicherung) in 2019, it was revealed that 65.6% of vacancies in Germany were for skilled professionals, out of which 80% were hard to fill because of a lack of skilled personnel. The dual education system attempts to fill this gap and provide students with more job opportunities, thereby offering them income, security, and self-reliability. Given that students in the dual education system receive high-quality vocational training and education, they are well prepared to enter the job market at a young age, and the firms that participate in their training are more willing to hire them when they graduate. Students can achieve new heights when guided by experts in the right direction. Often, parents and students see studying as the only possible way, even if they might thrive much more in a vocational training/dual studies course. For this reason, DUALpro is increasingly working with schools and school projects of Goethe Institute in helping them implement professional orientation programs that are based on students’ talents and interests. DUALpro is the leading provider of information and resources for professional orientation in Indian schools and aims at a collective approach towards education by students, educators, parents, and job providers.
