KOLKATA: German companies are looking to expand their businesses in Bengal in various industrial sectors. Tom Reiner, regional director of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce discussed emerging prospects of trade and investments between Germany and India with a focus on Bengal and other parts of northeast India on Thursday. Currently, 2,000 German companies are operating in India that employ around 4 lakh people, according to Reiner.
These companies are working in machinery, engineering goods, plastic, agricultural goods, chemical products and pharmaceuticals segments. "Around 150 companies are doing business in Bengal and other parts of eastern India. We want to bring more companies that are keen to explore the business avenues in the state in various sectors like chemical and pharmaceuticals, water treatment, software and services, engineering and mining," Reiner told TOI. Both Reiner and Barbara Voss, consul general of the
federal republic of Germany in Kolkata, noted that their country has been reeling under a shortage of skilled workers, so German companies are looking to hiring skilled labourers from Bengal and other parts of India for a "prolonged period."
"Germany intends to collaborate with India and ensure attaining the sustainable development goals as outlined by the United Nations. We need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and ensure that global temperature is brought down," said Voss.
N G Khaitan, president of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, said, "In the field of defence cooperation, Germany has been providing valuable technical support to India since the initial phase of building the country's defence warfare, which has evolved with major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) operating in India."
