Virtual Kick-off event: SustainAwards 2022 in Industrial Water Management in Bihar, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal

On 28th June 2022, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC), in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, organised the virtual kick-off event to launch the SustainAwards 2022 in Industrial Water Management in Bihar, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.   

The event was conducted with the support of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA), and the State Infrastructure & Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand (SIIDCUL).  

The event started with welcome remarks from the representatives of the two project partners: Raghu Babu Nukala, Project Director, GIZ, and Stefan Halusa, Director General, IGCC. Y. S. Pundir, Architect Planner & PIO from SIIDCUL for Uttarakhand, and P. Kamalakanth, Executive Director from WBIDC for West Bengal, gave their states inputs shedding light on the situation on the ground. They are public partners representing the regional authorities partnering with SustainAwards 2022.  

The best-practice section of the event started with the first speaker from the industry: Snehal Jariwala, Head of Environment, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. He presented Adani’s successful approach of managing industrial parks responsibly and highlighted the importance of efficient industrial water management. Thereafter, Tanvir Ahmed, Managing Director, Harbauer India Pvt. Ltd., followed as the second Industry expert, briefly elaborating on his company’s Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) project to the public sector and the applicability of the technology in every industry.  

As the highlight of the event, Vinod Babu Bommathula, Acting Member Secretary and Director, CPCB, delivered a special address followed by the official virtual launch ceremony of the SustainAwards 2022. IGCC and GIZ welcomed Vinod Babu Bommathula, Acting Member Secretary and Director, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) , as the chief guest for the event. In his special address about why water conservation and environmental protection are of the essence, he emphasised the rapidly increasing demand for water among all industries while highly welcoming the joint approach of this initiative as it brings together the private sector, public sector, associations, and development cooperation. Furthermore, all public partners highlighted the challenge that India is facing to balance economic growth while ensuring the conservation and availability of one of the world’s most crucial natural resources, water, for current and future use  

IGCC Project lead for the SustainAwards 2022, Johannes Kotschenreuther, presented the framework of the awards and explained the criteria and what the winners await as a price. More information for companies and industrial parks on “How to apply” can be found on the IGCC website.

The session was followed by a Q & A session, ensuring interaction between the participants and the speakers. The event was concluded by Stefan Halusa, Director General, IGCC, and Raghu Babu Nukala, Project Director, GIZ, concluding the event.  

Call for Winners!   

Companies of different sizes and industrial parks in the States of Bihar, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal are invited to participate and present their good practices, innovative solutions, and contributions to industrial water management! Companies that have their headquarters situated outside of Bihar, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal but operate a plant/factory/branch, etc, in the aforementioned States are also eligible to apply.  

 In such a case, the application should be filled under the name of the respective subsidiary with an address in any of the three States.

 Applications will be assessed along five main criteria, and a 5-member panel of independent judges will select 15 winners.
